Gerald Belanger Collection

A Growing Collection

Gerald Belanger, of Marmora, has been collecting newspaper clippings and writing the history of that community for over a decade. Quinte Branch OGS is pleased to announce that we have been given permission to publish Gerald’s work for the genealogy and historical communities. While focusing mainly on Marmora, the newspapers which Gerald researched covered much of Centre Hastings, so if you have ancestors from this area, then this new collection will be of interest to you.

Gerald Belanger Collection Volume 1
(DVD or PDF by email – $30)

This DVD covers the following area newspapers from 1850 to 2013. The core coverage is from the Centre Hastings newspapers marked in italics while the out of area papers cover Centre Hastings residents mentioned in them. There are also many re-prints of notices carried in foreign papers quoting the death of an area resident.

Belleville Intelligencer, Community Press, Community PressEastern Edition, EMC, EMC Northeast Edition, Havelock Standard, Marmora Herald, Marmora Shield, Madoc North Hastings Review, North Hastings Review, Oshawa Times, Peterborough Examiner, Peterborough Review, Picton Gazette, Stirling Argus

The bulk of the entries are obituary and funeral notices, but there are also births, marriages, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, police investigations, school events, town events, family reunions, elections, and much more. Since these are scans of the original clippings, they include all of the original information and photographs where they were included. There are “Pioneer Sketches” which highlight the lives of founding members of local townships, including the place they came from originally. While the index only covers the primary people mentioned in the clipping, there are some with names of all extended family members and neighbours.

More from this Collection is coming in 2022

We are currently working on Gerald Belanger Collection Volume 4, which we hope to publish in 2022. This volume will contain clippings from the North Hastings Review from 1877 to 1911 and from the Stirling Argus 1879-1925. There are even more to come from the dedication that Gerald had to recording the local History. Quinte Branch is proud to digitize this collection and make it available to those who are researching in Hastings County.
