Reading Handwriting & Creating Transcriptions – What does that say? It doesn’t take long before researchers are faced with trying to decipher documents written in older scripts. How can anyone decode those old letters? Understanding and practice is required when transcribing historical records. Every genealogist and family historian must develop basic transcription skills. Mastering the art of transcriptions is essential and will enhance your effectiveness as a researcher.

Cheryl Levy, PLCGS, is a graduate of the International Institute of Genealogical Studies, where she is an Educational Consultant, mentoring students and teaching various topics, including methodology and Canadian records. She loves transcribing old handwriting, and enjoys presenting genealogy lectures and workshops, both online and in-person. Researching her own family history since the 1970s, Cheryl’s research interests include the Quinte Region of Ontario and United Empire Loyalists, with her own roots in Nova Scotia and Colonial New England.
